What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA originally came from the space industry. Now this technique is also used in air purifiers to filter pollution from indoor air. HEPA stands for: High Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA filters are air filters that, depending on the type of filter, stop at least 85% and up to 99.999995% of all dust particles (most penetrating particle size) of 0.1 micrometer (µm). HEPA filters are classified into different classifications. Classification H13 indicates a filtration of 99.75% and 99.97%, so all dust particles larger than 0.1 micrometer (µm) are stopped.

How a HEPA filter works

In a HEPA air purifier there is a fan that sets the air in motion. First the air is sucked in. This air then passes through the HEPA air purifier and filter and is filtered of dust particles and blown back into the room.

What can a HEPA air purifier filter?

A HEPA air purifier filters particles as small as 0.1 micron from the air with an effectiveness of 99.97%. One micron is one millionth of a meter (extremely small). A hair is about 70 microns thick and just visible to the naked eye. A HEPA air purifier removes many types of airborne contaminants such as coarse dust, fine dust, smoke components, mold, viruses, bacteria, aerosols, pollen, pet dander and dust mite allergens.

A HEPA air purifier must be periodically maintained to keep it working properly. The HEPA filter becomes contaminated with use, so it must be replaced at some point. To maintain clean air, it is necessary to replace the HEPA filter regularly. Used HEPA filters are not reusable and are disposed of as waste after use.
